Vermont Life's Special Collector's Edition
Celebrating Champlain

Official Publication of the
Lake Champlain Quadricentennial Commission

Four hundred years ago this summer, Samuel de Champlain, the great French explorer, paddled south onto a huge lake in a part of the world known by his home nation as New France. He came with Algonquin allies and did battle with their enemies, the Iroquois. The first known European to enter the lake, Champlain opened the way for further exploration, trade, and eventual French and English settlement. A warrior and adventurer, Champlain was also a geographer, mapmaker, diplomat, author, navigator and sailor.

This year, the Lake Champlain Quadricentennial Commission is exploring and honoring the region's rich history as a natural treasure and invaluable recreational resource. As part of this effort, Vermont Life has published a special collector's edition titled Celebrating Champlain.

Celebrating Champlain features 100 pages of fascinating articles and riveting historical and contemporary photographs. It traces the lake's history from its formation 10,000 years ago through massive geologic forces (including the retreat of a mile-high glacier) to its 21st-century use as recreational resource.

Detailed photos bring the old Burlington waterfront to life, and fascinating stories tell of Native American life along Lake Champlain's shores and the battles fought on the lake during the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. Abenaki canoes, sailing canal boats, steamships, and modern-day kayaks and sailboards fill the pages. There are also feature stories on Burlington's evolving waterfront, an update on the latest efforts by scientists and environmentalists to improve the lake's water quality and an exploration of the lake's prominence in bass-fishing circles.

For anyone planning a vacation or just looking for a weekend's worth of fun, Celebrating Champlain offers a calendar of top events, including music, fireworks, parades, art displays and a host of other activities. The magazine also offers a guide to historic sites on the lake, from Fort Ticonderoga, where Ethan Allen helped launch the Revolutionary War, to St. Anne's Shrine on Isle La Motte, where the first French settlers said Mass and prayed for their souls. There are activities for young and old, from Nordic skating on the lake in winter to visits to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Ferrisburgh and the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center in Burlington.

The magazine is the official Lake Champlain Quadricentennial publication. To order for only $9.95 with FREE SHIPPING, visit the Vermont Life Catalog.
